Gentleman's types of prints

These days, men have countless options when it comes to fashion. Gone are the days when menswear was boring and predictable. Whether it’s formalwear, streetwear, workwear, or anything in between, there’s a style, color, fabric and fit for every personal aesthetic and preference.

Men can be just as fashion forward, if not even more so, than women. However, when it comes to classic traditional suits, especially for professional occasions, the standard black, grey, and navy colors are still the uniform. Talk about predictable. The good news is, that doesn’t always have to be the case. You can look sharp, well put together and professionally appropriate while still being able to express your own personality and fashion sense. How, you may ask? It all comes down to your accessories and the details of your outfit. Choosing a striking tie is a great start and one of the best ways to stand out from the uniformed crowd.

There’s no reason for you to have to stick to a plain, solid colored tie, especially when there are so many other fashionable options for you to choose from. As we all know, ties come in varying fabrics and also, varying designs. We’re sharing a quick guide on the different types of prints you can choose from to get you a step ahead on the fashion game.

Paisley

A paisley print is characterized by numerous teardrop shapes with curved ends, called a boteh or buta. The teardrop shapes can be designed in different sizes and can have smaller teardrops within them. The shape is stylized with scalloped edging, and is typically designed together with other complimentary shapes like circles, flowers and leaf-like images, just to name a few. Paisley prints come in a multitude of color combinations and usually look the best in deep, dark and vibrant, earthy colour tones.

Floral

Floral prints are, of course, designed with flowers and foliage. The flowers can be of any size, variety, and color, against a background of any other contrasting or complementary colour tone. In some cases, the floral features can be sporadically laid out, or conversely, there can be a profusion of floral images on the print.

Polka dot / Dotted

Polka dot prints include circular shapes of any size and color combination. Polka dots usually feature dots of the same size that are spaced evenly, with a single color for the dots, against a solid colored background, creating a uniform pattern. However, other dotted designs can include circles and dots of varying sizes, filled or outlined circles, spaced evenly or unevenly, or even designed with smaller circles within it or overlapping with it.

Stripes

As we all know, stripes refer to a set of parallel lines that are either vertically, horizontally or diagonally aligned. The lines can be of any width and color or any combination of widths and colors. The lines themselves can be solid or dashed. Stripes are arguably the most popular print for neckties.

Plaid

Combining varying sized stripes, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, creates different plaid prints. There are many different types of plaid, depending on the arrangement of the lines, their respective colors and the background colour they’re set against. Plaid prints include gingham, check, and tartan, just to name a few of the most common.

Graphics

Of course, prints and patterns can also include symbols, icons or any other imagery. Common graphic prints include day to day images that we see and are familiar with. This can include anything from animal shapes, stars, cars, boats, or even images that are relevant in pop culture.

Whatever outfit or suit you choose to wear, there are countless prints to choose from for your accompanying necktie or pocket square. Don’t feel tied down to just wearing plain old accessories – pun intended.
